St. Isaac’s Cathedral

St. Isaac’s Cathedral

St. Isaac’s Cathedral is the largest, the most famous and the most ornate Cathedral in St.Petersburg. Its gilded dome is 25,8 meters in diameter, so in fact St.Isaac’s Cathedral is the first building that you will see if you come to St.Petersburg by air or by boat.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral was built in the 19th century as the principal cathedral of St. Petersburg. It is 101.5 meters high and spacy enough to accommodate 12 000 people during the service.

During the tour you will see the richly decorated interior of the Cathedral. Beautiful icons were painted by the best Russian artists, and the mosaics are so intricate that you can hardly tell them from the paintings, and also a whole collection of marble and different semi-precious stones decorating the walls and floors of the Cathedral will impress anyone.

You will also see the models and pictures which illustrate different stages of the construction of the Cathedral. Our guide will tell you the story of the construction, which is quite unusual, and also explain some engineering solutions, which allowed to lift the marvelous granite columns and build the huge dome – the first dome of such size in Russia. The construction of the Cathedral took 40 years!

You can take a separate tour of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral or incorporate an inside visit into your city tour.

Optionally we can include a visit the Colonnade of the Cathedral where you will enjoy a marvelous panoramic view of St.Petersburg historical centre and the Neva river.
